The Power of a Simple "Thank You"
Fueling Frontline Retention with The Show Love Project
My Role
Brand Strategy, Conceptual and Experiential Lead, Creative Director.
The Challenge
Following the pandemic, the healthcare industry faced an unprecedented crisis: a massive exodus of professionals driven by emotional fatigue and severe mental health struggles. For HCA Mission Health, the mandate was to create a meaningful intervention that would boost morale and retain vital talent, while creating a halo of community goodwill for the brand. We knew an expected, highly polished corporate marketing campaign wouldn't solve a deeply emotional retention problem.

Strategy: The Brilliance of Simplicity
We realized that generating profound positive sentiment for a brand doesn’t always require a fantastical, multimillion-dollar stunt. Sometimes, the most brilliant strategy is the simplest one.
We positioned the brand not as a corporate entity, but as a steward of humanity. We wanted to actively identify the innate compassion of healthcare workers and invite the public to participate in that same spirit. We conceptualized The Show Love Project—an open-source platform of gratitude that allowed the community to encourage any healthcare worker, regardless of where they worked, while also encouraging staff to uplift each other across departments and competing facilities.
Execution
To ensure the project felt like a genuine human movement, we utilized a raw, analog visual identity featuring simple hand-drawn doodles, torn paper, and minimalist white space.
We then took this unpolished, authentic aesthetic into the real world with a beautifully simple mechanic: offering the public a free cup of coffee in exchange for writing a handwritten note of thanks to a healthcare worker. This effortless trade proved highly engaging, proving that people want to show their support when given an accessible way to do so. We scaled this simple act across the region—deploying coffee trucks, hosting events at the hospital, setting up in public squares, activating at local baseball games, and building pop-up installations.
By turning the simple act of writing a note into a community-wide event, we successfully surrounded weary frontline workers with physical, tangible proof of their immense value.
