The Organism Over the Organization:
How "We Show Up" Built a National Brand
My Role
Brand Strategy, Conceptual and Experiential Lead, Creative Director.
The Challenge
"We Show Up" is my most successful campaign to date, born out of an intense crisis communications challenge during the height of the COVID-19 pandemic. Initially, the project was intended as a defensive, single-market response to a local nurses' union website that was heavily criticizing HCA's pandemic efforts. We needed a way to tell the brand's story and defend its reputation, but we faced a delicate dynamic: how do you advocate for the hospital system without invalidating the exhausted nurses protesting it?
Strategy: A Living Organism
The breakthrough was erasing the distinction between the organization and its workers. Instead of defending a corporate entity, we positioned HCA as a living organism. Knowing frontline workers despised the "hero" cliché, we bypassed it entirely to focus purely on the high-level humanity they practiced daily. By positioning the brand as the stewards of great humanity where sometimes the best medicine isn't medicine at all, It defused the protests because the union couldn't possible protest the campaign because it was a brilliant reflection of themselves.
Execution
The constraints of the pandemic informed a highly dramatic, black-and-white photojournalistic visual aesthetic. This candid, unvarnished style captured the deep emotion and elevated humanity of the hospital floor. To elevate the visuals, I crafted clever, poetic prose that served as the heartbeat of the broadcast spots. Using rhythmic writing like "Crash carts, beating hearts... Last size, first cries," we bypassed traditional clinical marketing. The commercials were structured to first highlight everyday people practicing good humanity, and then pivot to parallel that exact behavior within the hospital. It sent a clear message: we all know good humanity when we see it, and that is exactly what you will experience at an HCA facility.
Impact
What began as a localized crisis response in a single market rapidly evolved. As the virus spread, so did our messaging, expanding across the country to raise favorability and trust for HCA Healthcare. The campaign's emotional resonance was so undeniable that regional hospitals continuously adopted it, ultimately driving the executive decision to bring all regional logos under the HCA banner and build a true, unified national brand.
